How can universities better connect STEMM and the humanities?
That question was at the centre of Stronger Together, a special event hosted by McMaster’s Centre for Advanced Research in Experimental and Applied Linguistics (ARiEAL) this spring. The event brought together researchers and students to explore how interdisciplinary thinking can strengthen both research and education.
Through panel discussions and audience dialogue, attendees examined the value of integrating STEMM approaches into the humanities, and humanistic perspectives into STEMM-based research. Conversations focused on how universities can better support interdisciplinarity across both research and curricula, helping students develop broader perspectives and more diverse skillsets.
Keynote speaker Colin Phillips from the University of Oxford shared practical ideas for building interdisciplinary communities and creating environments where collaboration across fields can thrive.
The event highlighted growing interest in approaches that break down traditional academic silos and encourage new ways of thinking about complex challenges.
By creating space for these conversations, ARiEAL is helping foster stronger connections across disciplines and supporting more collaborative approaches to research, teaching and student engagement.
More about ARiEAL
The Centre for Advanced Research in Experimental and Applied Linguistics (ARiEAL) is housed within the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University. ARiEAL is a research centre that brings together a community of researchers ranging from undergraduate trainees to established scholars, and enables the researchers to excel in their problem-driven language science research in fundamental, experimental, and applied linguistics.
