Society & Impact Luncheon: Bridging academia and practice to close the gender-gap in cycling

Dr. Léa Ravensbergen and Rachel Johnson led a thought-provoking Society & Impact Luncheon in February focused on their campus-society research collaboration.
Dr. Ravensbergen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth, Environment & Society, and Rachel Johnson is Project Manager, Sustainable Mobility for the City of Hamilton. Together, they’re tackling the gender-gap in cycling, which shows that approximately one third of city cyclists are women and two thirds are men.
The team shared how they’re working together to make cycling safer and more accessible for all – through local policy change, improved infrastructure, and exciting opportunities for students to tackle real-world transport issues.
Sukhvinder Obhi, McMaster’s Associate Vice-President, Research (Society & Impact), thanks Dr. Ravensbergen and Rachel Johnson for showcasing how their work is making a difference in local communities.
“This collaboration is an inspiring example of the positive impact that’s created when we foster collaboration between McMaster researchers and our community partners,” he says.
