Professionalism and Environmental Factors in the Workplace Questionnaire (PEFWQ)

""
Rapid changes in the healthcare sector and human resource shortages have had an impact on the stability of global work environments, making maintaining professionalism a challenge.

Summary

Aiming to stimulate discussion of professionalism in the workplace, Dr. Andrea Baumann and Camille Kolotylo at McMaster University, developed the Professionalism and Environmental Factors in the Workplace Questionnaire (PEFWQ).

The questionnaire is designed to determine nurses’ perspectives about key environmental and professionalism factors or attributes that influence nurses’ professionalism in practice. There are five environmental and eight professionalism attributes used to describe professionalism in the workplace.

The PEFWQ consists of a self-administered 82 item instrument divided into three sections: demographic data, environmental attributes, and professionalism attributes. Each item uses a 5-point Likert Scale response format (1=strongly agree and 5=strongly disagree).

The scores are used to stimulate discussion about environmental and professionalism factors that affect nurses’ professionalism in practice. This instrument is not intended as a personal professionalism measure or a diagnostic benchmarking tool. It is designed to identify areas of concern to nurses and provide a starting point for discussion.
