Our suite of assessment tools, the Children’s Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) and Preferences for Activities of Children (PAC), represents a comprehensive and validated approach to understanding children’s participation in recreation and leisure activities. Tailored for children and youth aged 6 to 21, these measures provide valuable insights into various dimensions of their engagement beyond school-related activities.
Both measures contain 55 activities related to children’s day-to-day participation in activities outside of the school curriculum. There is a self-administered and interviewer-assisted version of each measure. The CAPE takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete, depending on the number of activities the child does. The PAC takes generally 15-20 minutes to complete. Both measures are appropriate for children and youth (with and without disabilities).
Applications
- Academic studies
- Evaluation use
- Clinical Trials
Advantages
- CAPE evaluates children’s involvement in everyday activities, covering five dimensions: diversity, intensity, enjoyment, with whom, and where. The PAC taps into children’s preferences for involvement in each activity, thus providing insight into what is important to them.
- Thorough examination of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, and construct validity [1].
- Flexible administration options, including self-administered and interviewer-assisted versions available for both measures.
- Applicable across a wide range of populations, promoting inclusivity.
- Established through a longitudinal study of 427 children with physical disabilities in Ontario.
