The mandate of the Committee is to provide advice to the Vice-President, Research & International Affairs about administrative and policy matters related to research involving human participants.

Chair
The Committee is chaired by the Vice-President, Research & International Affairs. The Associate Vice-President Research serves as Vice-Chair
Terms of Reference
- Facilitates communications between McMaster University and its affiliated hospitals, Hamilton Health Science and St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton, with respect to research ethics issues, policies and procedures;
- Serve as the forum for identifying, prioritizing and addressing substantive issues related to ethics review and compliance, with each institution responsible for administering its own resolutions.
- Serve as the primary institutional liaison with external organizations concerning McMaster University’s policies and procedures for research involving human participants;
- Provide advice to the Research Ethics Boards of McMaster University and its affiliated hospitals with respect to the development of educational programs for their respective research communities;
- Identifies opportunities for and facilitates the co-ordination of joint research ethics initiatives and activities among McMaster University and its affiliated hospitals;
- Review and assess the ethics guidelines, review process and procedures and resource allocations supporting the Research Ethics Boards for quality assurance purposes; and
- Review and assess institutional resource requirements need for the administration of human research ethics to meet the research ethics mandate.
Meetings
A minimum of two meetings will be held per year. Additional meetings may be called at the discretion of the Chair. Quorum will constitute 50% of the members.
