Description:

To support research in its early stages, helping scholars develop new questions, methods, and ideas. These short-term grants fund projects of up to two years, including case studies, pilot initiatives, and critical analyses of existing research. IDG is open to both emerging scholars and established scholars exploring new directions distinct from their ongoing work. Applications may include Indigenous researchresearch-creation, and national or international collaborations.

Additional Program Information:

SSHRC will host two webinars via MS Teams to provide updates and answer questions. Registration is required.

Eligibility:

  • Proposals can involve any discipline, thematic area, approach or subject area eligible for SSHRC funding. See subject matter eligibility;
  • Applications submitted to SSHRC that would be more appropriately evaluated by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council or the Canadian Institutes of Health Research will not be accepted.
  • Ineligible projects include: Curriculum development; program evaluation; teaching material; preparation; conference/workshop organization; digitization of a collection or database creation;
  • A researcher who applied for an Insight Grant in October 2025 can apply for an Insight Development Grant in February 2026, provided that the objectives of the research are significantly different.

Application/Nomination Process:

By January 7, 2026 (9:00 AM)*: Email draft application as word documents to your Senior Advisor for content review.

By January 26, 2026 (9:00 AM)*: Submit your final application through the SSHRC portal for administrative review.  Submit a completed, signed Application Approval Form to ROADS.

By February 2, 2026 (4:30 PM): ROADS will submit your application to SSHRC.

* Note: Applications received after this time may not receive a full review.
