NSERC funding:
Each funding agency will provide funding to its national researchers, subject to its national rules and budgetary availability. Canadian applicants are only eligible to receive funding from NSERC. International researchers must fund their own research activities.
Each team must make a substantive contribution to the project. To ensure balanced participation, the Canadian or the international team’s budget must account for at least 25% of the overall project budget. Example: For a project where the total of the Canadian and international budgets is CAD $200,000, the Canadian or the international teams must contribute at least $50,000.

Description:
Canadian university researchers can once again access funding to collaborate with international research teams through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) program. The program supports innovative natural sciences and engineering research projects that bring together complementary expertise from Canadian and international university researchers to deliver benefits for Canada. Their international collaborators must have secured funding from their respective national funding agencies through peer-reviewed applications that clearly describe the Canadian team and its role in the project.
Note– This call is for Canadian researchers who were preparing a collaboration with their international counterparts but were unable to submit an application to NSERC by the May 20, 2025 deadline, provided the corresponding international award was granted between that date and the program’s reopening and the international project remains viable. For these applications, the 120-day submission rule does not apply. If you are in this situation, contact NSERC to determine whether you may submit an application for the November 25, 2026 deadline.
