Description:

The government announced an intake for the Substance Use and Addictions Program (SUAP) to fund community-based supports and evidence-based health interventions. McMaster previously received funding to “update the 2017 Canadian guideline on the use of opioids for non-cancer pain.” The funding can be used for hands on interventions for students suffering from substance abuse issue, and for case studies, research with practical applications on substance abuse treatments.
The funding priorities under SUAP are as follows:

1. Supporting People with Lived and Living Experience (PWLLE): This priority focuses on supporting individuals with personal experience in substance use. Projects will enhance their roles within organizations, including training to support prevention, harm reduction, and treatment initiatives. Priority is given to projects that promote PWLLE leadership roles and aim to change the organization’s culture to be more inclusive of PWLLE.

2. Post Treatment Aftercare and Community Transition: Projects in this category target the transition of individuals back into the community after accessing health services or correctional facilities. They should be recovery-oriented, strengths-based, and person-centered. Priority is given to projects that address diverse populations disproportionately impacted by substance use.

3. Addressing Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD): This priority supports the development and delivery of programs and tools for AUD, including screening, brief intervention, and referral to services (SBIR). Projects may focus on adapting tools for specific populations at risk for AUD and increasing the uptake of SBIR tools by healthcare professionals.

4. Addressing Adult Tobacco Cessation: Projects in this category focus on innovative tobacco cessation supports that go beyond individual efforts and promote systemic change. This includes developing cessation supports for populations with a high prevalence of tobacco use and incorporating vaping as a cessation tool and harm reduction measure. Projects should also transfer evidence-based knowledge into the healthcare system.

Applicants can submit separate applications for different project ideas, with no limit on the number of applications. Additionally, one application can address multiple funding priorities if logically explained. Each application will be assessed independently by Health Canada.
