At what cost societal impact: Investigating characteristics and consequences of grimpact
Date: Wednesday, October 30th
Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: Great Hall, Alumni Memorial Hall
Dr. Sukhvinder Obhi, Associate Vice-President, Research (Society & Impact), invites you to learn more about the work of Dr. Gemma Derrick, whose research focuses on grimpact – a term used to describe the space between impact and reward, where the nature and value of societal benefits are in flux and continually contested.
By exploring cases of grimpact – in which research generates negative impact – Dr. Derrick shows how its risk is amplified by a systemic lack of acknowledgement by academic governance actors, as well as a sense of powerlessness to monitor how research is (mis)used beyond academia.
