The Office of the Vice-President, Research (OVPR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Martin Horn as Deputy Vice-President, Research (acting) for a one-year term effective July 1, 2024.
Horn joins the OVPR from the Faculty of Humanities where he served as Associate Dean (Graduate Studies and Research) for the last five years. Responsible for overseeing graduate admissions, curriculum development and graduate student recruitment and retention, Horn fostered a sense of community among graduate students and promoted the faculty’s research endeavours internally and externally.
Andy Knights, vice-president, research (acting) says he’s keen to work with Horn over the next year and tap into his talents to advance the research agenda.
“Martin’s demonstrated leadership skills will serve the OVPR and the research community well,” says Knights. “His thoughtful and considered approach, combined with his ability to see the big picture, will be key to our efforts,” noting that Horn’s contributions as Associate Dean were instrumental in keeping the research enterprise moving during COVID.
Horn joined McMaster ‘s Department of History in 1995 after completing his PhD at the University of Toronto. He was a long-standing member of the department’s executive committee, before serving as graduate chair in the department for several years. He is also a past-president of the McMaster University Faculty Association.
A specialist in European international relations including the two world wars of the 20th century, Horn teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His research lies at the intersection of business, finance, diplomacy and the interaction of states with non-governmental actors. He is the author of three books, the most recent of which was J.P Morgan & Co. and the Crisis of Capitalism: From the Wall Street Crash to World War II (2022).
Horn says he’s looking forward to contributing to the University’s broader research ambitions.
