Autism Classification System of Functioning: Social Communication (ACSF:SC)
Summary
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a huge challenge in the field of childhood neurodevelopmental disability. The wide ‘spectrum’ of these conditions means that people’s functional capacities and limitations vary enormously. The Autism Classification System of Functioning: Social Communication (ACSF:SC) – Integrated is a tool developed to help identify ‘levels’ of social communication skills among children and youth (2-18 years of age) with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
It is a five-level descriptive system based on the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). The ACSF:SC- Integrated provides a standardized and simplified way for clinicians, therapists, teachers, and parents to discuss a child/youth’s social communication abilities.
Advantages
- Enhances Collaboration: Collaboration between parents and professionals, promoting a team approach to support the child’s development.
- Standardized Communication: By providing a uniform descriptive system, the ACSF enables consistent and clear communication among parents, clinicians, therapists, and educators.
- Time-Efficient: The ACSF can be learned and applied quickly, allowing parents and professionals to classify a child’s social communication abilities within minutes after reviewing the user guide.
- Reliable and Validated: The ACSF has been tested and found reliable and valid for children and youth aged 2 to 19 years.
