Engineering professor John Preston appointed strategic advisor on McMaster’s nuclear enterprise

The Office of the Vice-President, Research, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. John Preston as Strategic Advisor to the Vice-President, Research on McMaster’s Nuclear Enterprise. 

Preston, who recently completed two terms as Associate Dean Research, Innovation and Partnerships in the Faculty of Engineering, assumed the one-year role on July 1, 2024.  

Andy Knights, vice-president, research (acting), says Preston’s bold approach as a champion of all things research, education and innovation will help to advance McMaster’s nuclear portfolio. 

 “John has a track record of identifying untapped opportunities, building partnerships and fostering a culture of innovation among faculty, students and external partners,” says Knights. “His unique and creative style will help us to realize our nuclear potential and maximize our role as Canada’s nuclear university.”  

Preston, a professor of engineering physics, played a critical role in the success and growth of the Faculty of Engineering over the last decade; leading its research initiatives through transformative innovations, change and challenges. He also helped to build its nuclear capacity and reputation – something he’s keen to expand upon to advance McMaster’s nuclear enterprise.  

“As a world leader in nuclear research and education – from nuclear medicine to clean energy and next-generation materials – McMaster has the physical and intellectual assets to drive nuclear innovation in Canada and around the world,” he says. 

“It’s an exciting time for nuclear and I’m looking forward to working with the academic community – across all disciplines – and our external stakeholders to create opportunities with significant impact.” 

Working closely with Knights and McMaster’s chief nuclear officer and associate vice-president, nuclear, Dave Tucker, Preston will focus on expanding educational opportunities within the nuclear enterprise.
